Studying at Waseda University

It was some 35 years ago that I last sat at a desk in a classroom and studied.

Among my university courses, I preferred the general education classes taken in my first and second years to the specialized courses of my third and fourth years.

I seem to remember choosing many subjects that interested me, such as cosmology, writing and expression, and English.

Now that I enjoy eating so much, I had been thinking that, if I were to study again, I would like to study something food-related. Then I heard that Professor Ikuhiro Fukuda, who is also a guest at Yahata Sushi, would be teaching a cooking-themed course in an open college program for working adults. I simply had to enroll!

It is a ten-session course entitled “Reading the World of French Cuisine.”

I am thrilled to be taking a class in a classroom for the first time in 35 years.

What surprised me when I went to the classroom was that, whereas teachers used to write on the blackboard, they now use PowerPoint!

The student—meaning me, of course—goes back to his student days and takes notes (laughs).

In any case, the class was simply fascinating.

Since it was about food—French cuisine, no less—the 90-minute class flew by.

Even as a student, I enjoyed learning from teachers I liked and in classes that interested me, and those are the things I still remember today.

The only difficulty with this class was that it featured so many delicious-sounding dishes, such as pot-au-feu and potée, that my stomach started growling during the lecture… (^^;;)

I am already looking forward to seeing what the next lecture will be like!
