Waseda Myoga Gelato
The intense summer heat began all at once as soon as the rainy season ended.
This year, even after the rainy season began, the weather was relatively comfortable, so the sudden change has caught us off guard.
When it is this hot, we naturally crave something cold.
One dessert we often serve with Yahata Sushi’s omakase nigiri and courses is “Waseda Myoga Gelato.”

As we mentioned previously on this blog, myoga fields once covered the area around Waseda University, and since the Edo period, it is said that the crop was cherished under the Waseda Myoga brand.
More recently, Waseda myoga seeds were discovered, and nearby farmers began cultivating them. Today, it has established itself as a brand of Edo-Tokyo vegetables.
Waseda Myoga Gelato, made with myoga that has this history, was developed jointly by the Waseda Shopping District Association and Match Work Group Waseda, an officially recognized volunteer group at Waseda University.
At Yahata Sushi, we actively serve it as well, so that many of our guests can discover its delicious flavor.
Our classic matcha blancmange is sometimes served for dessert, but when it is gelato, please enjoy it while thinking of the people who made it.
We have included a video by Match Work Group Waseda below, so please take a look.
